ties
Dr. Manhattan is a godlike entity with the ability to manipulate matter at the subatomic level. He can also teleport (both himself and others) through time and space, can alter his size at will, and can be in multiple places simultaneously. Dr. Manhattan is both psychic and seemingly omniscient about the past and the future.

character bio
Dr. Jonathan Osterman, the son of a watchmaker, studied nuclear physics at Princeton during the early years of the Cold War. In 1959, Dr. Osterman was accidentally trapped in a test chamber during an atomic physics experiment and was completely disintegrated. However, he was able "reassemble" himself and was reborn as Doctor Manhattan, a glowing, bright-blue being with nearly omnipotent powers.

The transformation of Doctor Manhattan
Jonathan Osterman becomes Dr. Manhattan

Doctor Manhattan quickly became America's greatest hero and its greatest weapon, bringing a quick and decisive end to the war in Vietnam and standing as a one-man deterrent to Soviet aggression. He also single-handedly solved the global energy crisis.

As a result, the United States has become extremely dependent on Doctor Manhattan as an instrument of policy and defense. Because he exists outside of time (he lives in the past, present and future all simultaneously), Doctor Manhattan sees all of history as predetermined, and has a very stoic and fatalistic disposition. Over the decades he has become more detached and less human.

associations
Dr. Jonathan Osterman was romantically involved with fellow scientist Janey Slater at the time of his transformation into Dr. Manhattan. As time went on, Janey aged while Dr. Manhattan did not, and he eventually started a relationship with Laurie Juspeczyk, the second Silk Spectre. Dr. Manhattan was a member of the Crimebusters super-team, and at the time of Watchmen, is one of the last legally active superheroes on Earth.

trivia
  • The character of Doctor Manhattan is based in part on the comic-book hero Captain Atom.

  • The circular mark on Doctor Manhattan's forehead is the symbol of the hydrogen atom.
