Janey Slater met Dr. Jonathan Osterman when he joined the research team at Gila Flats in 1959. They became lovers while he was still Jonathan Osterman, and they remained a couple after he became Doctor Manhattan.

Their relationship turned sour over time, partly because in his new form he did not age, while she continued to grow older. They parted company when he started his affair with Laurie.

Years after the breakup, Janey Slater made the news with allegations that her close and prolonged contact with Doctor Manhattan had led to her developing cancer.
