The Mothman constructed wings that enabled him to glide through the air while fighting crime.

He was one of the longest to remain in the Minutemen. He had a number of left-wing friends and was questioned harshly by the House Un-American Activities Committee. It was believed that this stress precipitated his severe alcoholism and mental breakdown. He spent the later part of his life in an institution.

The former Minutemen (those who survived and were not forced out of the group) continued to get together for years as friends after their glory days had ended, and the Mothman was always welcome, a beloved comrade, despite his declining mental health. They all spoke kindly of him, feeling that the life of a costumed hero is always walking the line of lunacy, so his fate could as easily have been any of theirs.
