NixonA large contributing factor in creating the world of Watchmen is the political landscape as it was shaped using the tools of costumed heroes who existed in the employ of the government.

Watchmen becomes historical science fiction by portraying superheroes turning the tide of the Vietnam War, granting the United States a clear and commanding victory.

The assassination of John F. Kennedy is an event that occurs in Watchmen just as it did in reality, but where the true story of that tragedy remains a mystery to us, in the world of the comic, we know who pulled the trigger, and we can easily infer why. The Comedian is the official henchman of the government, and he ensures Nixon's rise to the presidency as well as continuing to protect his interests and security thereafter by assassinating Woodward & Bernstein before they can break the story of Watergate.

With superpowers at his command, Nixon is able to maintain his authority and completely shape the world.
