The following timeline notes the major events affecting primary Watchmen characters, leading up to 1985, the year in which the main story takes place.

Watchmen1916
Hollis Mason (the first Nite Owl) is born.
1924
Edward Blake (The Comedian) is born.



1929
Jon Osterman (Doctor Manhattan) is born.



1938
Hooded Justice, the first costumed crimefighter, appears.



1939
A wave of costumed crimfighters appear: Captain Metropolis, Nite Owl, Silk Spectre, The Comedian, Dollar Bill, The Silhouette, Mothman.

The Minutemen are formed.

Adrian Veidt (Ozymandias) is born.



1940
Walter Kovacs (Rorschach) is born.



1945
Dan Dreiberg (the 2nd Nite Owl) is born.



1946
The Silhouette is thrown out of the Minutemen when it's revealed that she's a lesbian.

The Silhouette and her lover are murdered.



1947
Sally Jupiter (Silk Spectre) retires from crimefighting and marries Laurence Schexnayder.



1948
Jon Osterman goes to Princeton to study nuclear physics.



1949
Laurie Juspeczyk (the 2nd Silk Spectre) is born.

The Minutemen disband.



1951
11-year-old Walter Kovacs viciously attacks and injures a bully; he is taken from his mother and put into foster care.



1956
Sally Jupiter divorces Laurence Schexnayder.

Walter Kovacs's mother is murdered.

17-year-old Adrian Veidt donates his family fortune to charity and devotes himself to following the conquests of Alexander the Great.



1958
Jon Osterman graduates from Princeton with a PhD in nuclear physics.

Adrian Veidt becomes Ozymandias.



1959
Dr. Jon Osterman works at Gila Flats atomic testing facility, where he meets and falls in love with Janey Slater. He is apparently vaporized when trapped in a test chamber during an atomic experiment.

Several months later, Dr. Osterman reappears as Doctor Manhattan.



1960
Doctor Manhattan is revealed by the US government as a the world's first true "super" hero, and a powerful instrument of American policy.

Doctor Manhattan meets fellow heroes Nite Owl (Hollis Mason) and Ozymandias.



1962
Hollis Mason retires, and Dan Dreiberg takes up the identity of Nite Owl.

Hollis Mason publishes his tell-all memoirs, Under the Hood.



1963

President John F. Kennedy is assassinated. The Comedian is seen on the grassy knoll as trigger man.



1964
Walter Kovacs becomes Rorschach.



1965
Rorschach and Nite Owl team up to defeat the villain Big Figure.



1966
Laurie Juspeczyk becomes the 2nd Silk Spectre.

Captain Metropolis attempts to for a new super-ground, The Crimebusters. Their group's first meeting is a failure.

Janey Slater leaves Doctor Manhattan.



1971
President Nixon sends Doctor Manhattan to Vietnam. Doctor Manhattan meets The Comedian there.

Unable to stand up to the power of Doctor Manhattan, North Vietnam surrenders.

Doctor Manhattan's friend Wally Weaver dies of cancer.



1973
Woodward and Bernstein's investigation of the Watergate break-in is abruptly halted when both men are murdered.



1975
Nixon proposes a constitutional amendment eliminating term limits for US presidents.

Ozymandias retires from crimefighting, announces his true identity, and begins amassing a fortune by marketing and merchandising his costumed-adventurer persona.



1977
The Keene Act is passed, outlawing all costumed vigilantism (except for officially licensed government agents).

Nite Owl and Silk Spectre retire. Doctor Manhattan and The Comedian become "licensed" crimefighters. Rorschach continues fighting crime in defiance of the new law.



1984
Richard Nixon is elected to his 5th consecutive term as President of the United States.



1985
The Comedian (Edward Blake) is murdered. Rorschach begins to investigate the crime, setting off the events of Watchmen.
