Official Sweepstakes Rules (the “Rules”)

SPONSOR
This Watchmen: Director's Cut Sweepstakes (the “Sweepstakes”) is sponsored exclusively by Wetpaint, located in Seattle, Washington (“Sponsor”). Sponsor reserves the right to modify, suspend or cancel the Sweepstakes (with or without notice) at any time and/or to substitute another promotion in its place.

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR RECEIVE A PRIZE IN OR INCREASE CHANCE OF RECEIVING A PRIZE IN THIS SWEEPSTAKES.

Access the Watchmen Wiki [http://www.watchmen-movie.org] (the “Website”) during the Promotional Period and register for the Sweepstakes by following the instructions found on the Website. Such instructions will require the entrant to (a) register for a username if they don't already have one and (b) complete the short entry form provided on the Sweepstakes landing page during the Promotional Period. A maximum of one (1) Sweepstakes entry for each individual is permitted for online entries. An entrant who exceeds this entry limitation will have each of the multiple submitted, online entries invalidated for prize drawing/consideration hereunder, and such conduct may result in the disqualification of the entrant from any and all participation in this Sweepstakes (as determined by Sponsor in the exercise of its sole discretion). All Internet access and usage charges are the sole responsibility of the entrant. If for any reason the Internet portion of the Sweepstakes is not capable of running as planned, including infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other cause(s) which corrupts or affects the administration, fairness, integrity, safety or proper conduct of the Sweepstakes, then Sponsor reserves the right, exercisable at any time in its sole discretion, to terminate, modify or suspend the Internet portion of the Sweepstakes. INVALID ENTRIES; OWNERSHIP OF SWEEPSTAKES MATERIALS
Sweepstakes entries mechanically reproduced or made in any manner other than by following Sponsor’s instructions as set forth on the Website or in any other written communication issued by Sponsor are invalid and ineligible for any prize drawing/ consideration hereunder. All Sweepstakes entries, together with any and all accompanying or other Sweepstakes-related materials submitted by any Sweepstakes participant hereunder, shall become the exclusive property of Sponsor and will be neither acknowledged nor returned.

The Prizes (or any other prize awarded hereunder) cannot be assigned, transferred, exchanged or redeemed for cash; provided, however, that Sponsor specifically reserves the right (exercisable at any time and for any reason, in Sponsor’s sole discretion) to substitute a different item(s) in place of the Prizes, such substitute item(s) to be of substantially equivalent or greater value than the ARV of the Prizes.

DRAWING FOR PRIZES
On approximately July 20, 2009 or on some other date (as determined by Sponsor) following the conclusion of the Promotional Period, fifteen (15) potential recipients of the screening passes will be selected by means of a random drawing conducted by Sponsor (or its designee) from among all eligible entries contained in the Sweepstakes entry pool; the winner of the signed movie poster will be chosen by the same drawing method on or after July 24, 2009. All decisions of Sponsor regarding the Prize drawing and any and all other aspects of the Sweepstakes shall be final, binding and non-appealable. The odds of any Sweepstakes participant receiving a Prize (or any other prize awarded hereunder) will be determined by the total number of eligible Sweepstakes entries received. To obtain the name of the actual Prize recipients (available after August 1, 2009), a Sweepstakes participant or other interested person should send a self-addressed, stamped business-size (#10) envelope, postmarked by no later than August 15, 2009, to: Wetpaint Watchmen: Director's Cut Sweepstakes, PO Box #21347, Seattle, WA 98111. Residents of the State of Vermont may omit return postage.

NOTIFICATION OF PRIZE RECIPIENTS; POTENTIAL ALTERNATE PRIZE DRAWING; OBLIGATIONS OF PRIZE RECIPIENTS
Shortly after the above-set forth Prize drawing, Sponsor shall endeavor to notify the potential Prize recipients by means of private message through the Watchmen wiki, telephone, e-mail, U.S. Mail or overnight courier (as determined by Sponsor in the exercise of its sole discretion). If the potential Prize recipients fail to respond to Sponsor within two (2) business days after such initial notification attempt, or if the potential Prize recipients decline to accept the Prizes, or if any Prize notification or the Prize itself is returned as undelivered, then the potential Prize recipients shall forfeit any and all rights to receive the Prizes, and Sponsor may elect (but shall not be required) to select an alternate potential Prize recipient by means of another random drawing subsequently to be conducted by Sponsor (or its designee) from among all remaining eligible Sweepstakes entries. By participating in this Sweepstakes, each entrant hereby irrevocably and in perpetuity defends, indemnifies, holds harmless and releases Sponsor, WHV, the respective parents, subsidiaries, affiliated companies, advertising, marketing and promotion agencies, successors and assignees of Sponsor and WHV, and the officers, directors, employees and agents of each of the above-set forth entities, from and against any and all claims, actions, causes of action, demands, judgments, liability, damages (to persons or property), injuries, losses (to persons or property), costs or expenses of any type which may be sustained by such entrant or any other party in connection with (I) the participation in this Sweepstakes or (II) the receipt, enjoyment, possession, ownership, use or misuse of the Prize or of any other prize that may be awarded hereunder. Each actual Prize recipient hereby acknowledges, agrees and understands that he/she shall bear sole responsibility for the reporting and prompt and full payment of any and all applicable federal, state and local taxes that may be owed in connection with the receipt, possession or use of the Prize (or of any other prize that may be awarded hereunder). Furthermore, and to the fullest extent consistent with applicable law, each actual Prize recipient hereby specifically grants permission to Sponsor and WHV to use his/her name, age, city, state, photograph, likeness (actual or simulated) and/or voice for any and all advertising, marketing, promotional, publicity or other legitimate commercial purposes, without paying any obligation on the part of Sponsor or WHV (1) to pay any additional compensation (of any kind or amount) to such entrant or (2) to seek or obtain the approval of such entrant.

DISPUTES
Each entrant into this Sweepstakes hereby expressly agrees, irrevocably and in perpetuity, that: (a) any and all disputes, claims, actions, and causes of action arising out of or in connection with this Sweepstakes, or any prize awarded hereunder, shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action, and any judicial proceeding shall be brought and shall take place exclusively in a federal or state court located within King County in the State of Washington (with each Sweepstakes entrant hereby specifically agreeing to submit to the exclusive personal and subject matter jurisdiction and venue of such courts); (b) any and all claims, judgments, damages and awards shall be limited strictly to actual out-of-pocket costs actually incurred by the Sweepstakes entrant and paid to a third party, including costs associated with entering this Sweepstakes, but excluding any attorneys' fees; (c) under no circumstances shall any Sweepstakes entrant be permitted to obtain awards for, and each Sweepstakes entrant hereby waives any and all rights to claim, punitive, exemplary, special, incidental, indirect, consequential and/or other damages, other than for actual out-of-pocket expenses actually incurred by such entrant and paid to a third party; and (d) each Sweepstakes entrant hereby waives any and all rights to have any damages award multiplied or otherwise increased. Motion Comics are a cool new trend in the world of graphic novels. Instead of turning the novels and comics into full blown movies with big budgets the studios are developing more stylized animated releases. Motion Comics maintain the same look and feel that the original artists intended and add subtle "camera" moves and voice over to bring the illustration to life. In this way they are a lot closer to the original comic, but cooler. Once of the best things about these is that they are primarily made for digital distribution on services like iTunes, so you can download them straight to your computer, iPhone, iPod, etc. Warner Bros. has come out with a whole series of these Motion Comics around Watchmen .

January, 2009 - Malin Akerman Comments on Film's Legal Troubles

In an interview with MTV (view video here), Akerman sums up the film's legal troubles as "sh-t happens."

December, 2008 - Warner Bros. Vows to Fight Watchmen Delay

The movie is still tentatively scheduled for a March, 2009 release. However, Fox is trying to halt that date as the lawsuit over distribution rights continues. Warner Bros. claims it has no intention of moving the release date.

December, 2008 - Judge Rules in Fox's Favor Over Watchmen Rights

Surprisingly, a federal judge has ruled in Fox's favor in the ongoing battle for Watchmen distribution rights. Justice Gary A. Feess wasn't expected to make a ruling until late January, 2009. After his decision, he stated "The parties may wish to turn their efforts from preparing for trial to negotiating a resolution of this dispute or positioning the case for review.”

2008 - Fox Fights Warner Bros. Over Rights to Watchmen

Waiting until production had wrapped on the film, 20th Century Fox took Warner Bros. into court, claiming that they held the distribution rights to the film. Warner Bros., however, claims that they legally purchased the rights.

Watchmen was published in 12 issues from September 1986 through October 1987. The publication of Watchmen brought an end to the Bronze Age of Comic Books and ushered in the Modern Age of Comic Books.

In addition to the main story line (already interlaced with multiple flashbacks), each chapter also includes supplemental material from the Watchmen universe – newspaper clippings, book excerpts, copies of letters, police documents, etc.

Also interwoven into the story is the pirate-adventure comic Tales of the Black Freighter (which is being read by one of the characters as the story of Watchmen unfolds).

Who Are the Minutemen?

Formed in 1939, the Minutemen were a group of costumed heroes who were active throughout the 1940's. They were the "Golden Age" equivalent to the Watchmen, who formed many years later. The Minutemen disbanded in 1949, following many controversies.

Under the Hood is the published memoir of Hollis Mason, the original Nite Owl. In it he chronicles his own career as a costumed hero as well as "telling tales out of school," as Sally Jupiter scolded him, about his time with the Minutemen. Hollis Mason decided to write his autobiography upon retiring from the Minutemen and revealing his identity. His tale comes proudly full circle in the text when he reveals that he has been contacted by a young man who wishes to take up the mantle of Nite Owl and continue the work Hollis left behind.
A lot of the context for the larger story of Watchmen can be found in the materials such as chapters from Under the Hood that are included at the end of the issues. A significant piece of the puzzle provided by Under the Hood is in its frank portrayal of the costumed hero culture as reckless, thrill-seeking, vain, prone to excesses, without any external checks or balances, and incapable of self-policing.
In Under the Hood, Hollis Mason wrote with great disappointment that being a costumed hero got less fun when the criminals stopped behaving similarly outrageously. That crime could be measured by varying degrees of how much fun it is to fight is an alarming notion to the average person, especially as it helped lead to the costumed heroes' decline. Crime was still occurring, and people were still affected by it, but it was no longer as entertaining to deal with, so it was less of a priority for self-proclaimed protectors of the people. No wonder resentment and mistrust toward costumed heroes grew over time and led to such changes as the Keene Act.
It is easy to see how costumed heroes could be seen as potentially causing more harm than they could balance with good, when their very existence inspires similar extravagance and outrageousness on the part of criminals. At the end of the film Batman Begins, Jim Gordon describes the phenomenon of escalation, which is what is seen in the history of the Watchmen universe as well. Why, for instance, would any criminal even attempt to rob one of the banks famously under the protection of Dollar Bill? The fact of a costumed hero's presence becomes a special challenge to the criminals. Rather than deterring them, it draws them out to try their luck, and dangerously, it allows them to prepare methods of assault that counter the known quantity the particular hero has become. Hollis writes with deep regret of Dollar Bill's death, and he (reasonably enough) blames the bank chain's costume designer for the tragedy, but his own story's subtext tells of the deeper truth that the costumed hero lifestyle invited jeopardy.

Watchmen is a limited comic-book series by Alan Moore (with art by Dave Gibbons and color by John Higgins), released in 1986 and 1987 in 12 monthly issues, and subsequently published in a collected graphic novel format. Watchmen tells the story of an alternate-timeline world, in which costumed vigilantes change the course of American history.

The "superheroes" of the Watchmen universe do not have super-human powers (with one highly notable exception) – instead, they rely on their intelligence (Ozymandias), fighting skills (Silk Spectre), technology (Nite Owl), weapons (The Comedian), and sheer will (Rorschach) to combat crime.

Watchmen's primary point of divergence from actual American history is the emergence of a godlike super-being called Doctor Manhattan, who becomes an all-powerful instrument of American policy – ending the war in Vietnam, solving the energy crisis, keeping Soviet aggression in check. Backed by Doctor Manhattan's seemingly limitless power, President Nixon manages to get re-elected four consecutive times, and in October of 1985 (when the events of Watchmen take place) he is already serving his fifth term. By that time, nearly all other costumed heroes have been forced into retirement by the Keene Act of 1977, which outlaws all costumed vigilantism.

The story of Watchmen centers on the murder of one of the costumed heroes (The Comedian), which brings several of the other heroes out of retirement (mainly Rorschach, Nite Owl, and Silk Spectre) in an attempt to solve the crime. Watchmen also examines the consequences of America's overreliance on a single champion, when Doctor Manhattan suffers a personal crisis of conscience, abruptly leaving America vulnerable to enemies both foreign and domestic. Thematically, Watchmen focuses on the relationship between power and morality, and like Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns (1986), it tells a revisionist superhero tale against the background of Reagan-Thatcher power politics during the Cold War.

Watchmen has been made into a movie by director Zack Snyder, and was released on March 6th 2009.

Plot Synopsis

As Edward Blake's funeral is underway in New York, Laurie Juspecyk decides to visit her mother, Sally Jupiter, in California. Sally is kinder to Blake's memory than Laurie expects, and she tells her daughter that after all this time, what happened is just "history." As the talk turns to more of Sally's past exploits, she shows Laurie a pornographic comic she'd been portrayed in back at the height of her career. Sally is proud and pleased about the comic, and Laurie is disgusted and ashamed. As they talk about their different perspectives on the comic ("flattering" versus exploitative and "gross"), Sally flashes back on the evening of a photo shoot she appeared in with the Minutemen, the night she was attacked by Blake.

At the funeral, Adrian Veidt thinks back on the inaugural meeting of the Crimebusters, when he met the Comedian. That night, Blake was derisive of the notion of forming a new super group, saying that the rest of the costumed heroes in the room had no idea about the real problems facing the world, that they were just playing dress-up and having fun but doing no real good. He asserted that "inside thirty years the nukes are gonna be flyin'" and Ozymandias would be "the smartest man on the cinder."

Also attending the funeral, Doctor Manhattan remembers his time in Vietnam with the Comedian. Just after they brought about the US victory, he and Blake were prepared to leave for home. Blake's pregnant Vietnamese consort arrived to talk to him, and he crudely dismissed her, saying he intended to leave her and the baby and "forget [...] all of it." She swore he would remember her his entire life, and to make good on the threat, she slashed his face open with a broken bottle. As Doctor Manhattan looked on, Blake pulled his gun and killed her. He then replied to Doctor Manhattan about his action, "And y'know what? You watched me. You coulda changed the gun into steam or the bullets into mercury [...]! You don't really give a damn about human beings."

Back in the present, another attendee at the funeral, Dan Dreiberg, remembers a night he and the Comedian teamed up during the police strike just before the Keene Act passed. The Comedian was his usual cynical, hard-edged self, while Nite Owl was trying to be hopeful. They discussed how the public had lost its trust for costumed heroes, and Blake expressed his belief that most of their fellow heroes were insane.

An unidentified figure is seen laying roses on the grave, then heading for home. When he opens his refrigerator, Rorschach shocks him by springing out from within. The man is Moloch, a former crime lord. Rorschach wants to know why Moloch was at Blake's funeral, and most of all, how Moloch knew Blake was the Comedian. Moloch explains that Blake had broken in one night recently without his mask and talked to Moloch as if confessing some great fearsome secret, though he'd never said exactly what it was. Blake had spoken of an island seen from an airship window, populated with "writers, scientists, artists," working on a "joke" beyond any evil the Comedian himself had ever known. He also mentioned seeing Moloch's name on a list, as well as Janey Slater's.

After Moloch finishes telling Rorschach the tale, Rorschach judges it so unbelievable it is "probably true." He then mentions illegal pharmaceuticals he had found while searching Moloch's home. When Moloch explains that he has terminal cancer, Rorschach has mercy and does not confiscate the drugs. Rorschach leaves and visits the cemetery alone, ruminating in his journal on the life and death of the Comedian.

Plot Synopsis

Watchmen begins with the investigation of the murder of Edward Blake by two parties with distinctly different investigative styles: a pair of police detectives who piece together the basic events of the death and ponder how it was a man of Blake's age was in such fine physical condition, and then Rorschach, who Batmans his way up the side of the skyscraper and proceeds to discover the secret closet that proves Blake was in fact the Comedian, a former costumed hero who has spent the last several decades in the employ of the US Government.

In another part of town, retired hero Hollis Mason has his friend Dan Dreiberg over for beer and reminiscence. Dan heads home to find Rorschach has broken in for a chat. Rorschach believes Blake's death bodes ill for all costumed heroes, that there might be a conspiracy. Dan accuses him of paranoia, but Rorschach points out how hard it would have been to kill the Comedian, which is proof enough that this was not a random murder. Dan tries to reminisce with Rorschach about the old days, when they were partners, but Rorschach dismisses him as having quit, while Rorschach alone remains active in defiance of the Keene Act.

Heading out into the night for answers, Rorschach next visits a dive bar and proceeds to perform genuinely pointless and random acts of brutality, in the interest of gaining information. He breaks fingers and demands answers, but there is no one in the place who has any information on Blake's death. He moves on to Veidt towers to talk to Adrian Veidt, warning him that he believes a "mask-killer" is at large, and that as a former costumed hero who is very well-known, Veidt is an easy target. His disdain for Veidt is clear, as he mocks Veidt's choice to capitalize on his hero image to sell toys and memorabilia. It is clear he thinks little of the claim that Veidt is the "smartest man in the world."

Finally, Rorschach visits the only other former teammates whose real identities are known to him: Doctor Manhattan and Laurie Juspecyk. Laurie is upset by the mere mention of Blake, whom she knows primarily as a man who tried to rape her mother years before. She becomes disgusted with Rorschach's viewpoint on the event and demands that he leave, whereupon he finds himself outside again, teleported away by Doctor Manhattan.

Inspired by Rorschach's mention of Dan Dreiberg, Laurie calls Dan up to have dinner. They talk about the old days and laugh over Rorschach's excesses as a vigilante. Laurie vents her ill regard for her past as a costumed hero, saying that the Keene Act was the best thing that ever happened.
